The U.S. Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina is pleased to announce a call for applications for the International Writing Program (IWP) Fall Residency, which will take place from September 1 to November 17, 2024.

The International Writing Program (IWP) is a prestigious annual forum at the University of Iowa that brings together 35 emerging and mid-career writers from around the world to Iowa City for an immersive 11-week cultural exchange. The IWP Fall Residency furthers participants’ professional development; advances their understanding of creative writing, literature, publishing, and U.S. societal values; and facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration.

IWP’s host institution, the University of Iowa, is also home to the world-renowned Iowa Writers’ Workshop. In 2008, Iowa City became the first UNESCO City of Literature (http://www.iowacityofliterature.org/) in the United States, the third such city in the world. Two IWP alumni—Orhan Pamuk of Turkey and Mo Yan of China—have received the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Further details about the program are available on the IWP website: http://iwp.uiowa.edu/.

Eligibility and Selection Process:

The IWP Fall Residency is open to established and emerging writers of fiction, drama, poetry, graphic novels, and screenplays from any country; writers of graphic novels and screenplays should also have record of creative work in another medium. All candidates should have a significant publication record: at least one published book, produced screenplay or staged play, or a record of having published regularly in the previous two years, in traditional or online media. The quality of their work should have been acknowledged by some form of national recognition or regional award.

Candidates must be between the age of 21 and 64 at the time of the program, be non-U.S. citizens, and be able to travel to the United States and stay in Iowa for the full eleven weeks. The working language of the program is English, and candidates must be proficient speakers of English. Candidates should apply with a significant writing project in mind, but they do not need to write in English; once a writer is selected, the program aims to provide translation for their creative work as needed. Candidates must be comfortable with cross-cultural dynamics and eager to engage with other writers from diverse cultures.

Family members and others are not allowed to accompany the writers during the Fall Residency. The IWP welcomes nominees with disabilities who require reasonable accommodations to participate in the program. If you have any questions about the program, please visit the Fall Residency’s FAQ website; should you have any technical issues with the application, please email the U.S. Embassy with the subject line “2024 Iowa Writing Program”: BHEXC@state.gov.
