June 19, 2022

Today’s commemoration reminds us that we need to shine a light on wartime sexual violence to support the survivors and defends human rights, and also to advance the safety, security, and prosperity of all people. The use of sexual violence in Ukraine today underscores that this heinous practice continues.

The United States stands with the survivors of the Partizan sports hall rape camp in Foca and with all survivors and victims of wartime sexual violence. We admire the brave individuals who have chosen to speak about their experience in the name of truth and justice. We remember and honor all who did not survive. It is particularly appropriate that we are gathered here today on the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict.

BiH authorities at all levels have a profound responsibility to accept the truth about what happened, seek justice for perpetrators of this and other heinous crimes, and support survivors in a meaningful way. This includes memorialization and commemoration. The United States will support those who take the difficult but necessary steps toward meaningful reconciliation.
